Scientists have been telling us that global warming is likely to result in increasingly devastating extreme weather events as we continue to burn fossil fuels and add more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.  Superstorm Sandy is a horrific example of the type of extreme weather that is in store for us. But how can we respond effectively and achieve a clean energy economy with all due speed?  While renewable energy resources like wind and solar are said to be our future, the deployment of these technologies has been painfully slow despite existing government programs and incentives.  This public discussion will examine how a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) could speed up the transition from fossil fuels to renewables within a timeframe consistent with addressing climate change and providing needed green jobs.  In the last three years a Clean Energy FIT program has created more than 22,000 green jobs in Ontario!  Why not in New York?!

This panel discussion is presented as part of the Alternative & Renewable Energy Issues course in Daemen’s Global & Sustainability program.  For information on this exciting new major and minor, visit http://www.daemen.edu/sustainability.  For more information about the panel discussion, wsimpson@daemen.edu or 839-0062.

Event Alert: Panel Discussion on Clean Natural Gas – 7:30pm on Monday, October 29th.

A panel discussion entitled “Clean Natural Gas? Exploring the Challenge of Hydrofracking” will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, October 29, in room 336 Duns Scotus Hall at Daemen College, 4380 Main Street, Amherst.  The event is free and open to the Public.

The discussion will be preceded by the film, “The Sky is Pink,” produced by Josh Fox and the Gasland Team.  Panelists are David Kowalski, Professor Emeritus; UB CLEAR; Blogs: j.mp/ReEnergizeBuffalo & j.mp/CleanEnergyNowScott Sackett, President, Skipping Stone Pictures; Joseph Currier, Mathematics Major, Daemen College; Lynda Schneekloth, Chairperson, Sierra Club Niagara Group (niagarasierraclub.wordpress.com/).  The event will be moderated by Walter Simpson (www.energyreallymatters.com).

For years natural gas has been also universally regarded as a clean fuel but no longer.  Drilling for gas in deep shale formations using hydraulic fracturing technology has changing everything.  Can fracking be done in an environmentally responsible way, as suggested by an abundance of TV ads?  Or is it too risky?  And do cleaner alternatives exist?  This panel discussion will address these questions and explain the role of citizen action and media in shaping natural gas public policy.

Solar & Green Building Tour of WNY

Buffalo, NY, On Saturday, October 13, 2012, over 1500 people from across WNY will experience the Solar & Green Building Tour, an annual event held by the Western New York Sustainable Energy Association (WNYSEA). With over 25 sites open across the region, for one day only, attendees will have an opportunity to learn about solar, geothermal, energy efficiency, net zero, green roofs, LEED buildings and reuse of historic structures. This event is not a traditional tour, it is an open house. All sites are open on October 13, 2012 from 10am – 4pm unless noted otherwise. The event is free, open to the public and no registration is required.  A full list of sites is available at www.wnysea.com.

WNYSEA believes that this event helps to establish a need and demand for green jobs across the region. “Last year we had the largest tour in all of New York State, and this year we plan to go even bigger says Bernice Radle, Co-chair of the 2012 tour. We have confirmed the NFTA Living Roof Bus Shelter, CIR Electric’s moving solar array that moves with the sun to optimize sunlight, Singer Farm Naturals in Wilson and so many others.  This is a great opportunity to learn from the folks who live with these technologies every day, not from a sales person trying to convince you to buy in. The Solar and Green Building Tour is an event that educates, inspires and encourages people to take the next step with their home or building.”

WNYSEA will be kicking off the annual event with an awards ceremony at 9:30a.m., on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Hispanics United of Buffalo – 254 Virginia Street on Buffalo’s West Side. WNYSEA will give its annual leader ship award to two organizations; Hispanics United of Buffalo for their efforts in promoting renewable technologies in our region and the Clean Air Coalition for their sustainability and air quality efforts across WNY.  The public is welcome to attend.  The NFTA will be providing 50 day passes for the metro/bus to encourage public transit which can be picked up at the awards ceremony. Additional prizes will be awarded to the people who attend the kickoff.

WNYSEA is a Proud Supporter and Sponsor of Preservation Plus!

WNYSEA is excited to tell you that the Preservation Plus conference happening next week is going to be really really neat and very informative on so many levels.

The conference goes beyond preservation and incorporates sessions on sustainability, urban planning and community revitalization. There are several key speakers going that we are excited about including Tracie Hall, from USGBC and Thomas Freed, author of Green Building for Dummies. Our co-chair for the 2012 Solar & Green Buildings Tour, Bernice Radle, will be speaking on greening historic buildings on Friday afternoon too!

We strongly encourage you to go. WNYSEA will have a table there and we will be promoting the Solar & Green Building Tour. We are very happy to sponsor and support such a wonderful event.

You can register for the conference here: www.presplusbuffalo.com

Sign Up Your Green Building for the Tour!

The WNY Sustainable Energy Association (WNYSEA) is preparing for the annual Solar & Green Building Open House  tour, which is slated for Saturday, October 13th, 2012. The organization is currently looking for homes and other buildings to be on the tour, so if you own a building that has some environmentally friendly, “green” features consider showing it off for the tour. By signing up to be a tour site, you have the ability to educate interested people about your green features. WNYSEA is looking for solar, geothermal, green building, energy efficiency, LEED, green roofs, passive solar, net zero, bale on bale construction and more. For more information and to sign up, click the link here.

About the tour: The self-guided tour is free and open to the public from 10am to 4pm on 10/13/12. Once all the buildings and sites have been identified, WNYSEA will compile a list of addresses and make the information available to the public. There is no sign up to attend the tour, you go at your own pace and see what you want to see. This way if there is a specific place or element you are most interested in, you can be sure to see it.

Green Building Open House is a tour across the Northeast that is promoted by the parent organization, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NSEA) and happens for one day only. It’s all about education and getting the experience from accomplished building owners so that more people can integrate similar features in their own buildings.

Last year there were forty-five sites across Erie and Niagara Counties, which was the largest tour in New York State. For more information email wnysea@gmail.com or go to www.wnysea.com.

Green Building Open House Tour – Save the Date!

Save The Date!
October 6th, 2012 is the Solar and Green Building Open House Tour!

The Western New York Sustainable Energy Association is proud to once again open the doors of the most sustainable sites across WNY to educate and inspire you to go green!

Last year we had over 1500 people attend the tour and had 45 sites open for free to the public.
We are happy to report that it was the largest tour in the Northeast! This year we hope for an even bigger and better tour – hopefully with nice weather too!

A little FYI – the tour is free and self guided. We are all volunteers who work throughout the year to bring this tour to you. You can go to one site or all the sites – it is up to you.

WNYSEA is looking for volunteers and for homes/buildings to be a part of the tour. Please contact wnysea@gmail.com for more information and to sign up or go to www.wnysea.com for more details.
